Understanding the Feeling of Distance from God
12/1/20252 min read

Are You There?
In our lives, there are moments when the presence of God seems elusive. During times of trial or uncertainty, we sometimes experience a profound sense of separation from Him and maybe question our spiritual beliefs. It is during these moments that we often question our faith and wonder why it feels as though God is far away from us.
Have You Left Me?
It is essential to recognize that these feelings of distance are not always indication of God’s absence. Rather, they may in fact suggest that He is indeed at work in our lives. Sometimes, God feels far away when, in reality, He is simply moving us forward as we hesitate. This often comes in the form of trials that challenge us to grow, adapt, and ultimately proceed on our spiritual path. To put it simply, allow me to illustrate (using pleasure). When at a playground or theme park with my children (and now grandchildren), it is common for me to direct them towards pleasurable experiences, such as larger swings, slides, or rides. Their responses at times were timid hesitancy due to irrational fear, and as I enthusiastically guided to the seemingly scary experience, there became a physical distance between us as I moved forward and they froze. Despite the results--avoidance or engagement--I never left their sides.
Sometimes it is more than pleasure to which we are being guided. It may in fact be growth and maturity.
The Importance of Spiritual Growth
Spiritual growth is rarely a short-lived, linear journey. Rather, it is filled with peaks and valleys, moments of closeness, and periods of feeling lost. When we perceive ourselves as distant from God, it can be a signal encouraging us to engage in self-reflection and contemplation. These periods are not punishments but opportunities for transformation. They urge us to reassess our priorities, recognize our fears, and take actionable steps toward our spiritual maturity.
Finding God in Moments of Hesitation
When faced with challenges that trigger feelings of separation, it is vital to remain grounded in faith. Whether through reading scripture (particularly God's promises to us--"I will never leave you or abandon you," Hebrews 13:5), or a community of believers support, maintaining prayer can help bridge the gap we perceive. Acknowledging our hesitations and addressing them can further illuminate understanding and connection. Instead of dwelling in despair over our current state, let us explore the underlying message: even in times of doubt, there exists an opportunity for growth.
Conclusion: Embracing Spiritual Journeys
The experience of feeling distant from God can be unsettling, but it often carries a deeper meaning. By embracing our journeys—complete with hesitations and obstacles—we allow ourselves the chance to evolve spiritually. Recognize that even in moments of confusion, God is guiding us toward personal strength and understanding. When it feels as if God has stepped away, remember that He may be gently nudging us forward, cultivating resilience within us. As we navigate these experiences, trust in the process of movement and transformation, for it is in our struggles that we find the path to spiritual maturity.
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. Philippians 1:6 (NLT)
